Biological Sciences Subject Guide

Biology is the study of living organisms: their structure, function, organization, origin, and evolution. It gave me a year to focus on my skills in bioinformatics and computational biology and to hone my specific research interests before beginning my Ph.D. Through the program, I spent a year splitting my time between learning, teaching, and conducting research, which helped convince me that I would be comfortable continuing to learn, teach, and conduct research during my Ph.D. and beyond. These Institutes bring faculty from Biology and other departments with biological interests into contiguous lab space.

Biology graduates can also transfer into medical careers, though this will usually require at least four years of postgraduate study. This means most biology courses will have core modules in the first year focusing on subjects such as cell theory and molecular biology, evolution, physiology and adaptation, gene theory, and homeostasis. By choosing one of our areas of specialization, such as Animal Physiology, Ecology and Environmental Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, or Plant Biology, you can better prepare yourself for these exciting career opportunities.

These students receive free on-campus housing and a living stipend during their research fellowship, allowing them the freedom to fully devote their time to investigating an area of their own interest. The core strands that unite all the various disciplines and sub-disciplines of the subject are: the study and characterization of living organisms and the investigation of the science behind living things.

New directions in biological research especially from the discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953, as well as new techniques made available in sciences like biochemistry and genetics were at first only slowly integrated by evolutionary biology. Biology pre-health students and others from UNC traveled to Spain over the summer to gain clinical hours, cherished memories and insights from physicians on what it truly means to be a healthcare professional.

Microbiology is a biological science involved with the study of microscopic organisms. In light of Campus closure regarding COVID-19, employees in the college of Natural and Health Sciences are working remotely and faculty are teaching classes virtually in an effort to best support our campus community. In the biological sciences, a common way to study the impact of a part of a system is to entirely abrogate it. For example, to determine the effect of a gene on an organism, scientists often compare knock-out animals, animals lacking the gene in question, to their wild-type counterparts.

The term biology comes from the Greek βίος (bios), meaning life” and from the Greek λογία (logia), meaning study of”. While more than a third of Oxford biology graduates go on to further study such as a research doctorate or postgraduate course in an applied field, over half embark on a professional career after graduating in areas as diverse as conservation, industry, finance, medicine, media, teaching or the law.
